From the beach at JBR to the tracks of Dubai Hills and Al Barsha Pond Park, Dubai is a fantastic place to train outdoors — for part of the year. The trick is knowing when to go outside, how to stay safe, and when to take your session indoors.
The outdoor season
Roughly October to April is prime outdoor time: cooler mornings and evenings make parks, beaches and running tracks a pleasure. From May to September, heat and humidity make outdoor training much riskier, especially in the middle of the day.
Pick the right time of day
- Early morning — just after sunrise is usually the coolest window, before the sun has heated the ground.
- After sunset — evenings are cooler, though humidity can stay high near the coast.
- Avoid midday — between late morning and late afternoon, move your session indoors, especially in summer.
Hydration basics
Start your session already hydrated — drink water through the day, not just during the workout. Bring more water than you think you need, and for long or very sweaty sessions consider a drink with electrolytes to replace the salt you lose. Your trainer should build in regular water breaks.
Dress for the heat
- Light-coloured, loose, breathable clothing.
- A cap and sunglasses for morning sessions.
- Sunscreen, even early in the day.
- Train in shade where you can — trees, building shadows, covered areas.
Know the warning signs
Heat illness can come on quickly. Stop, get into shade or air-conditioning, and cool down if you notice dizziness, headache, nausea, unusual tiredness, cramps, or if you stop sweating. If symptoms are severe or don't improve quickly, get medical help. A good trainer watches for these signs and will cut a session short without hesitation.
Adjust the workout, not just the location
On warmer days, outdoor sessions should be shorter and lighter: more mobility, technique and steady movement, less all-out intervals. Save the hardest efforts for cool days or air-conditioned spaces.
Summer plan B: train at home
When it's too hot outside, your living room or building gym becomes the training ground. Bodyweight circuits, resistance bands and kettlebells give you a full workout without the heat — which is exactly why home personal training is so popular in Dubai's summer months.
