Dubai has no shortage of personal trainers — which makes choosing one harder, not easier. The right coach can change how you feel in a few months; the wrong one can put you off training altogether. Ask these seven questions before you commit.

1. Are you certified?

A recognised personal training qualification shows a trainer understands anatomy, safe exercise technique and programme design. Don't be shy about asking to see it. Trainers working legally in the UAE should also be comfortable talking about their registration and insurance.

2. What do you specialise in?

A trainer who's brilliant at bodybuilding may not be the best choice for pre- and postnatal training, and a boxing coach may not be who you need for back pain. Look for someone whose experience matches your goal — weight loss, strength, calisthenics, boxing, mobility or training after pregnancy.

3. Have you worked with people like me?

Ask about clients with a similar starting point, age or schedule. A good trainer will happily share examples (without names) of what they did and what changed.

4. How will you track my progress?

Progress isn't only the number on the scale. Strong trainers track things like how many push-ups you can do, how your clothes fit, your energy and your sleep. Ask how and how often they'll check in.

5. What happens between sessions?

You'll spend far more time without your trainer than with them. Do they give you short home workouts, walking targets or simple nutrition habits? Are they reachable on WhatsApp for quick questions?

6. Can you train me where it suits me?

In Dubai, location decides whether you'll actually show up. Check that the trainer covers your area and is happy to train you at home, in your building gym or outdoors — whatever you'll stick with.

7. Do we get on?

This one is easy to overlook. You'll be spending a lot of time together, so you need someone whose style motivates you. Some people want a drill sergeant; most people do better with a patient, encouraging coach. A first session will tell you a lot.

Red flags to watch for

  • Promises of dramatic results in a few weeks.
  • Pushing supplements or extreme diets from day one.
  • No questions about injuries or health before the first workout.
  • Pressure to pay for a big package before you've trained together.
